What is Repointing?
Repointing (often called tuckpointing) is the process of grinding out damaged mortar joints and replacing them with fresh, compatible mortar. It restores the structural integrity and water-resistance of your chimney without needing to tear down the bricks.
Signs You Need Repointing
Check your chimney from the ground (or use binoculars):
- Recessed Joints: Mortar has washed away, leaving deep grooves.
- Cracks in Mortar: Hairline zig-zag cracks following the joints.
- Loose Bricks: If a brick shifts when touched, repointing might be too late—you may need a partial rebuild.
Compare these signs with our Spring Inspection Checklist.
The "London Match" Challenge
London has many heritage homes with yellow ("buff") brick. Using modern grey cement mortar on these soft bricks causes them to crack. We specialize in:
- Mortar Matching: Tinting mortar to blend with aged joints.
- Hardness Matching: Using lime-based mixes for older homes to allow breathability.
Rebuild vs. Repoint
If the bricks themselves are spalling (faces falling off) or the chimney is leaning, repointing is a band-aid. You likely need a rebuild. See our chimney services page for examples of both.
